Potentially, my career, or worse could have ended on January 31, 2008.  I was with a reporter doing "snow coverage" for a newscast.  The reporter was driving and I had been taking photos inside the car of driving conditions.  Coming around a turn, the car went into a slide, crossing all lanes of US Highway 50 just east of Placerville.

We hit a curb running the length of the highway and that set us into a roll, downhill, over 100 feet.  The California Highway Patrol told me that he counted about 8 complete rolls.  We landed upside down.  We were trapped.  Eventually, I was able to free myself, but my friend was totally trapped and I was unable to free that person.

Eventually, emergency personnel arrived and got us out and transported to a local hospital.

The reporter is doing well now, considering the circumstances.  I however, WAS doing  "modified duty" at work, until they dismissed me effective 6/5/2009 saying they had no more "modified duty" work available.  It was a physically demanding job that I have had a BLAST doing.

2009 HAD marked the 30th Anniversary milestone for me at KCRA-TV in Sacramento, California...but now, it's all over.

See comments above.

Below are just some of the fantastic things that this career had allowed me to do:

  • 3 time Emmy nominee
  • Have met every US President from Ford to George W. Bush!  Hope to meet Obama!
  • Been to the White House & inside the Oval Office
  • Covered Pope John Paul on his California visit in 1988
  • Covered the Queen of England's Sacramento visit in 1984
  • Flown on "Air Force One" with President Clinton in 1993
  • Covered the 1988 Space Shuttle "Discovery" Launch and Landing
  • Flown in the Good Year Blimp
  • Covered a Super Bowl & World Series
  • Appeared on "Oprah" in March 1997
  • Appeared in "People Magazine", "Readers Digest" & other forms of national media in 1997
  • Covered US Military action in Haiti in 1994

Met some of the biggest names in Sports & Entertainment.
Among the "LEGENDS" were Bob Hope, George Burns, Danny Thomas
and Tony Bennett!

Historical Figures like Rosa Parks, Cesar Chavez and more!!!

It is very hard to sum up a 30+ year career, but compared with a lot of other things I could have done, this had been most rewarding.

Too bad it ended the way it did, through no fault of my own.

What will the future hold?

The story would not be complete... without my pal Rodeo rescued from floods in 1997. Truly, the career highlight!
Of course there was the childrens book written about the rescue too...
